Department of Education releases new grades for schools

“We all work together and I think that’s the most important thing. It’s the affective stuff as well as the academics.” PRINCIPAL POLLY BRANN IS BEAMING ABOUT THE ‘A’ GRADE NARRAGANSETT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN GORHAM GOT THIS YEAR.. COMPARED TO LAST YEAR’S C. THEY OPENED THEIR DOORS TO EDUCATION COMMISSIONER JIM RIER TO SHOW HIM HOW THEY DID IT. “everybody works together. That’s the fabulous part I couldn’t do it alone, nobody could do it alone.” THE GRADING SYSTEM STARTED LAST YEAR AND FACTORS IN STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT AND GROWTH IN READING AND MATH, THE GRADUATION RATE FOR HIGH SCHOOLS AND THE GROWTH FOR ELEMENTARY STUDENTS IN THE BOTTOM 25 PERCENT OF THEIR CLASS. 121 SCHOOLS GOT A OR B RATINGS. 93 IMPROVED BY AT LEAST A LETTER GRADE. OVERALLMOST SCHOOLS EARNED A ‘C’. THE MAINE EDUCATION ASSOCIATION IS BLASTING THE GRADING SYSTEM ITSELFSAYING TO USSOME SCHOOLS REPORT GRADES THIS YEAR THAT ARE LOWER DUE TO ABSENCES AND TRANSFERS. AND SCHOOLS THAT GOT F GRADES LAST YEAR, GOT NO HELP FROM THE STATE IN IMPROVING. THE MEA BELIEVES IT IS AN AUGUSTA CREATED SYSTEM THAT SHAMES AND BLAMES SCHOOLS INSTEAD OF ACTUALLY HELPING SCHOOLS AND STUDENTS SUCCEED. COMMISIONER RIER SAYS THE GRADES PROVIDE A SNAP SHOTTHAT STARTS A CONVERSATION ABOUT THE BIGGER PICTURE. “to give someone a grade with 25 pages of back up information is not necessarily going to be productive so it’s to draw attention and get people to look carefully at the data.” BIDDEFORD SUPERINTENDENT JEREMY RAY SAYS THE F RATING OF BIDDEFORD MIDDLE SCHOOL IS NOT AN ACCURATE REFLECTION OF THEIR WORK. “I get an opportunity to be with you here today to say on camera I am proud of my teachers in Biddeford, they do an awesome job and they work hard. At the same time this stings. This stings for me and it will sting for our community.” BECAUSE OF THE STATE’S NEW TESTING SCHEDULETHE ‘F’ WILL REMAIN ON THE RECORD FOR A WHILE BECAUSE SCHOOL REPORT CARDS ARE NOT COMING OUT NEXT YEAR. THE STATE WANTS SCHOOLS TO USE THAT TIME TO CONTINUE TO GROW AND IMPROVE. THAT WAS LINDSAY LIEPMAN REPORTING. WE HAVE A SLIDESHOW OF ALL THE ‘A’ AND ‘F’ SCHOOLS ON OUR WEBSITE, PLUS A LINK TO THE FULL REPORT. JUST GO TO W-M-T-W
